Shahid Afridi is an entertaining all rounder who exploded onto the cricketing world by hitting the fastest ODI hundred (off only 37 balls) in his maiden innings. This was back in 1996 yet 13 years on that innings, some would argue that knock despite its brilliant was the undoing of Shahid Afridi

Afridi has to date played 285 ODI matches for Pakistan in which he has scored 5755 runs at an average of 23 whilst he has taken 264 wickets at an average of 34.69

He has always played cricket in an aggressive manner, though some would say reckless and he has refused to curb his aggressiveness. His style of play was and continues to be criticised by many but he equally has an army of fans who adore his daring approach to the game.

He spent the majority of his career as an opener for Pakistan, where he lacked consistency as good starts were thrown away. He was quite fortunate to have played as many games and was not too far from finally losing his spot in the side.

It was the late Bob Woolmer who helped him turn things around. His role in the team was changed and he became a very useful player. Woolmer utilised his hitting power by moving him down the order where he played many quickfire innings. Also this was the time when he truly became an all rounder as Woolmer recognised the strength of Afridi’s leg spin which was grossly underused previously, he was no longer a part time bowler but could have made the side on the strength of his bowling alone. He was transformed from an inconsistent batsman into a fine bowling all rounder. His fielding is also top class, he never gives up and his agility has got him some quality catches and saved many runs for Pakistan.

This period under Woolmer was when he broke into the Test side and performed very well. He scored runs at a healthy strike rate. His bowling was handy at Test level where he took some crucial wickets. Things turned when he announced a temporary retirement from Test cricket. Pakistan have not played Test cricket for a while but Afridi has work to do if he wants to regain a spot in the Test side. His last appearance in a test match was at Old Trafford in July 2006 where he scored 15 and 17 and took 1 for 76 in a heavy defeat for Pakistan against a Steve Harmison inspired England team.

His bolwing has improved in leaps and bound and has now become a leading bowler for the side. Although many felt that Afridi had played his best and last innings in 1996, he came to the party in the T20 World Cup in 2009. Two exceptionally un-Afridi like fifties in the semi final and final won Pakistan the trophy and Afridi legendary status as he stood mid-pitch hands outstretched like a superhero. It gave Pakistani supporters some hope that Afridi can for once become the all-rounder they all hoped he would be. His recent maturity and form has given him the honour of captaining Pakistan in T20 Internationals.

Recently speaking to PakPassion, Afridi stated that he wanted to concentrate solely on ODI and T20 cricket till at least 2011. Keeping with this trend, he has just recently signed to play for South Australia as their international player in the T20 KFC Big Bash Competition.

Unlike the great Pakistani spinners of yesteryears who were given a chance to play within a couple of years of their first class debut Saeed Ajmal had to spend more than a dozen years in first class cricket before getting a call to play for Pakistan. It is hard to imagine that both Saeed and Saqlain started their first class careers at almost the same time and while Saqlain became a household name with in a couple of years Saeed had to really struggle.

In 2004/05 Ajmal was a part of the Faisalabad Wolves side which won the T20 domestic tournament in Pakistan and therefore booked a ticket to play an ineternational T20 tournament in England. This is where a lot of the Pakistani fans got a first look at Ajmal and the first thing that became obvious was his ability to bowl the doosra, Saeed bamboozled a lot of batsmen with his doosra and played a big part in Faisalabad’s win in the tournament.

Saeed finally made his ODI debut in July 2008 after being recommended by the vice captain Misbah ul Haq. In his very first game he deceived a lot of the Indian batsmen and in the context of a really high scoring game his figures of 1/47 were more than satisfactory and helped Pakistan win the game. In the next game Saeed was too hot to handle for the young Bangladeshi batsmen and ended up with figures of 3/19. After being dropped for the T20 tournament in Canada(very controversial decision which caused the chief selector to resign from his post) Saeed came back in the ODI series against WI where he once again impressed with his bowling how ever his fielding was severely criticized after he dropped a couple of real sitters.

Saeed had a very good series in UAE against Australia showing some excellent variety, but suspicions about his action surfaced which he was able to clear from the ICC before joining the squad for the twenty / 20 World Cup. In this tournament Ajmal played a major hand in winning the World Cup for Pakistan. His subtle changes of pace and doosra, bamboozled batsmen and along with Afridi provided an excellent partnership. His captain had enough faith in him to even use him in the final overs. He finished second highest wicket-taker in the tournament and was further rewarded by receiving a test cap against Sri Lanka. Although he is 32 years old, the passion and character he brings to the field it makes you feel he will be around for a while yet.

Mohammad Aamer is a 17 year old, left arm fast bowler hailing from Gujjar Khan, Punjab. Aamer is highly thought of by many in the cricketing fraternity and is tipped to reach the top in International cricket. Aamer is tall and has a skinny frame but he has still managed to bowl at impressive speeds.

He was first picked out as a pace prospect by the legendary Wasim Akram at a pace camp back in 2007. Aamer then went on a tour of England with the Pakistan U19 side and emerged as a star bowler, taking regular wickets at a low average. Aamer then played in a tri-nation tournament featuring Sri Lanka and England, he again excelled with his pace and swing bowling. Unfortunately due to injury he missed out on playing in the U19 World Cup in Malaysia in 2008.

In March 2008 he made his domestic debut for the Rawalpindi Rams whilst also representing National Bank of Pakistan. His debut domestic season resulted in him taking 55 first-class wickets for NBP. He took a lot of top order wickets and those of players in the national side. This great domestic form resulted in him being selected for the Twenty20 World Cup which is to be held in England in June 2009.

In the T20 World Cup, he immediately began to deliver. Batsmen around the world were astonished at the pace this young 17 year old could generate. Opening the bowling, he was supported by his captain and picked up some crutial wickets along the way. The most important undoubtedly was that of Dilshan in the final from which Sri Lanka never recovered. Aamer was the find of the tournament and it was not long before he was fast-tracked into the ODI and Test team. His greatest moment to date in the test arena was at the Boxing Day Test match in December 2009. Although he bowled well in the first innings with little luck, the second innings was a different story as he picked up his first 5 wicket hall and gained respect from the tough Australian team. He has also shown glimpses that he can be a more than useful lower order batsmen with some handy innings.

Aamer is still very young and will need to be carefully managed by the coaches. He has had some injury problems in the past which will need close attention. He certainly has a bright future and Pakistanis are excited about his future.

The 2010 tour of England was a long awaited tour for both the players as well as the fans which showed best of Mohammad Aamer as he achieved many feats during the series which included youngest player to take a 5 wicket haul, youngster bowler to take 50 test wickets and youngest bowler to take 5 wickets at Lords and get name engraved at Lords Honour Board. Soon after acheieving these records Aamer's future seemed to shatter as he was alleged to spot fix as he bowled deliberate, pre-planned no-balls in Lords test match.

Abdul Razzaq is an all rounder who debuted for Pakistan in 1996 (ODI). He was recognised for his bowling but he showed that he was more than handy with the willow. At the start of his career he was a quick bowler, bowling in the late 80mph’s and sometimes getting a quicker one in the 90mph region. This speed of his did somewhat regress as the years went by.

He truly got international recognition at the 1999 World Cup in England, he was part of a Pakistani bowling attack that was lethal and enjoyed much success until the final. Razzaq bagged himself 13 wickets in the tournament which was a very good return when considering the bowling attack that Pakistan possessed.

Although his prime weapon is his bowling he proved to be a very useful batsman. He has played in all batting positions (2-11) but majority of his innings have come down the order. He is a very strong and clean hitter who scores at a healthy strike rate.

Abdul Razzaq has played 241 ODI matches in which he scored 4465 at an average of 29.96, whilst he took 246 wickets at an average of 31.13.

He managed to get himself into the Test side and became a mainstay due to his all round abilities. He played 46 Test matches for Pakistan scoring 1946 runs at an average of 28.61 whilst taking 100 wickets at an average of 36.94. Whilst his performances in Test have not been good enough he has given fans some memorable moments, none more so than his 71 runs in Mohali in 2005, where his partnership with Kamran Akmal saved the game for Pakistan. Also again with Kamran Akmal his 45 runs helped post a competitive total for Pakistan when they looked dead and buried 39-6 in Karachi in 2006 (Pakistan went on and won the game).

His performances at the start were of a high standard in both forms of the game but he did hit a slump around 2002-03 where his bowling lost pace and he also seemed to lose interest. He was very lethargic like in his approach to games. There were calls for him to be dropped but he managed to hold his spot with good performances here and there.

He was omitted from the Pakistan squad for the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup, which did not please him so he announced his retirement from International Cricket. Not long after he joined the ICL (Indian Cricket League) which has not been sanctioned by the ICC and therefore as a result will not be allowed to represent Pakistan as long as he remains in the rebel league.

Two years later, in 2009, Razzak was one of the first players to break ties with the ICL and he was instantly rewarded by being called up to the 2009 version of Twenty20 World Cup, albeit as a result of an injury to Yasir Arafat. He was immediately drafted into the team for an out-of-sort Sohail Tanveer and many credited Pakistan’s changes in fortune at the World Cup to his inclusion. He was retained in the squad for the tour to Sri Lanka but failed to impress as he lost his spot for the Champions Trophy.

Abdul Razzaq remains a talented all rounder but one who like many Pakistani cricketers underachieved yet still provided many memorable moments.

Mohammad Yousuf formerly known as Yousuf Youhana is one of the ‘rags to riches’ stories that you dream of. Despite being born into a life of extreme poverty, with a Christian background, his natural talents shone through.

Since his debut in 1998, he has been a regular on the Pakistani teamsheet. An elegant batsman, boasting one of the finest cover drives in the game, Yousuf has become one of the most prolific batsman in the last 2 years.

He smashed Sir Vivian Richards most runs in a year record in 2006 with a succession of innings that defied belief – scoring 1788 runs in only 11 matches, including 9 centuries at an average of 99.33.

Providing he can maintain his fitness levels, Yousuf is on track to surpass all the Pakistani batting records in the book.

In tests, he has scored over 7000 runs at a healthy average. In 2007 he was rewarded for his exceptional record by being named ICC Test Player of the Year – no mean achievement for a batsman who was playing in a poor side struggling for wins. However in the same year after being dropped for the T20 World Cup he decided to join the breakaway Indian Cricket League. The PCB tried hard to convince Yousuf to come back into the Pakistan cricket fold, but he refused. Eventually after a year in the wilderness, the PCB granted an amnesty to players in the unofficial league prompting Yousufs returned. He was immediately drafted into Pakistan's 15 man squad for a tour to Sri Lanka in June 2009 and finished with 253 runs including one century and one fifty.

When Younis Khan stepped down from the side due to differences with his players, Yousuf was handed the captaincy. He ws given a tough assignment away to New Zealand and then to Australia. While he managed to draw the series against New Zealand against a weakened side, it was the poor performance in Australia that had critics asking for him to step down. A Horrible clean sweep in the test series was partly blamed on Yousuf due to his poor captaincy in Sydney where Pakistan squandered a perfect chance to win in Australia after some bizarre defensive tactics when Australia looked like losing. The one day series was a similar poor showing for Pakistan.

Despite being a heavyweight run scorer n the domestic scene in Pakistan, Misbah ul Haq smply couldn’t break into a team boasting a mid order of Inzamam, Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf.

A brief, and disppointing flirtation with the Pakistan team in a number of low level tournaments in 2002 resulting in him being dropped. When another opportunity arose against Australia, he disappointed again in the test series, failing to live up to his promise and that sealed his fate – it should have been the end of his international career.

But Misbah is a fighter. He returned to domestic cricket, enjoying a prolific 2006-7 and this coincided with Pakistan’s humiliation in the 2007 World Cup, Inzamam’s retirement from cricket and and a successful stint in English Club Cricket.

At the age of 33 years old, Misbah was back – he was awarded a PCB Contract, and in another stroke of fortune, he was drafted in to replace Mohammad Yousuf for the World T20 Championship, held in South Africa.

He was one of the sensations of tournament – a super-cool individual, who virtually single-handedly guided Pakistan to the final with some truly amazing innings.

Whilst the final will be remembered for ‘that shot’ at the end of the game, Misbah was 1 shot away from taking Pakistan to World T20 glory.

He appears unfazed and unflappable out in the middle – reminiscent of the man he has replaced in the squad, and this temperament has seen him establish himself as one of Pakistan’s premier batsman.

The renaissance of Misbah ul Haq has been extraordinary – He is ‘Mr Dependable!, and is making the best use of his new found opportunity.

He now boasts an impressive Test and ODI record, with 2 scintillating test centuries against India in 2007, and was rewarded with the Pakistani Vice-Captaincy.

However the year 2009 was a tough one for Misbah and he had a tough time in all versions of the game. In 13 matches he averaged 33 at a slow strike rate of 65 and in Tests his average was a poor 28. With youngsters such as Fawad Alam and Umar Akmal starting to deliver, Misbah’s work will be cut out to further his career

An educated man, he is widely respected amongst his peers for calming influence within a team known for its instability.

Nasir Jamshed, the young Lahore based opening batsman, has stated he is an improved player and is continuing to develop his batting in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy playing for the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) team.
In an exclusive discussion with PakPassion.net, Nasir expressed his satisfaction with the progress of his side, as well as with his own personal performances. He stated "I'm always ready to play for Pakistan whenever the selectors feel the need to call me. I was ill during a few of the early games of this tournament but I'm confident that our team can do well".
Nasir was also impressed by the performances of pace bowler and fellow NBP teammate Mohammad Talha. "It is important that we have a lot of key players in good form such as Talha who could also find himself back in the international fold if he keeps performing and bowling the way he is".
Nasir, a former U19 World Cup winner, has had an impressive run with the bat in his six games in the domestic tournament, scoring 454 runs at a solid average of 45.40, including one century (120* against Sialkot) and two fifties.
The left-handed opening batsman has represented Pakistan in 12 ODIs, and was axed from the national side after his most recent international games. Concerns were expressed by onlookers about Nasir's penchant for driving loosely early on in his innings, and thus often edging to the slip fielders.
It appears that the 21 year old batsman has duly taken the feedback on board, and has curtailed his flashy stroke play in exchange for a slightly more circumspect approach. "I have now made a number of adjustments to my batting", he stated. "For example, I no longer play in the air as much as I used to and have worked on a few new shots. I've also looked to improve my temperament - cricket is a game where you continue to learn as you go".
After scoring a whirlwind half century against India in the 2008 Asia Cup, Nasir, who was just 18 at the time, suffered major cramps and was forced to retire his innings. "Unfortunately, fitness problems have hindered me in the past; I was often troubled by my hamstring and felt I needed to improve this important aspect. Thanks to training alongside David Dwyer and Saboor Ahmad, I am confident my overall fitness is picking up and will continue to progress".

In the spring of 2010, Nasir Jamshed found himself making the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Allegedly caught ‘red handed’, he was arrested for cheating on an English exam paper and later released on bail. He remains adamant that the events were blown out of proportion and feels that the accusations had no serious bearing on his performances. "The media blew up the situation about cheating entirely; it wasn’t a major issue but was exaggerated by the reporters. I considered it a stressful episode for me to go through at that time but, thankfully, it didn't really affect my cricket".

Despite the controversy, Nasir continues to maintain an optimistic outlook on his chances to make the national team and represent Pakistan at the highest level once again. "We usually practice at the NCA and A-team cricket helps you a great deal. You play with senior internationals and can always learn from them. If you perform, it's good for your morale and you can realistically think about getting [back] into the Pakistan team".
Nasir was also pleased with the crowds who turned up to the recently concluded Twenty20 tournament in Pakistan. The trophy was lifted by the Lahore Lions who secured a last over win over the Karachi Dolphins in the final. Nasir himself had set a blistering platform with a 57-ball 68, helping his team score a mammoth 221, and thus going on to win the game.
Organised at the venue of the chilling attacks on the Sri Lankan side in 2009, masses of supporters piled into the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore – giving the floodlit match a tremendous atmosphere – to watch a classic final between Lahore and Karachi. "The Faysal Bank T20 tournament was a very good experience", Nasir reflects. "The crowd in the final was great. I didn’t feel any extra pressure playing in front of so many people as I’ve experienced it in the past too, in fact I was happy that they came to watch. Even though Pakistan don’t play much at home, it’s good for the fans that they can view some form of cricket and get happiness from it".

Sohail Tanvir Was Fit to Tour New Zealand

Having attended the entire pre New Zealand tour training camp, Sohail Tanvir thought he was all set to be on the flight to face the Black Caps and to relaunch his international career, after a serious knee injury.

However, as the camp came to a conclusion, Tanvir got the uneasy feeling that all was not well and subsequently he was informed by the Pakistan team management that he would not be travelling to New Zealand for the three Twenty20 matches and two test matches.

Speaking to PakPassion.net ; sources close to 26 year old left armer Tanvir expressed their surprise at his omission from the tour of New Zealand. "Sohail took part in all of the training sessions and there was no indication that he would be withdrawn from the tour. He proved his fitness to everyone and his removal from the squad was no doubt a surprise to him. As far as I am concerned, Sohail was fit to tour New Zealand."

PakPassion has also learnt that there was no final fitness test for Tanvir to prove his fitness to the tour management and instead he was informed after the conclusion of the training camp that his services would not be required in New Zealand for the Twenty20 and test leg of the tour.

The source added that "the reason that was given to Tanvir was that he was struggling with his fielding, but he joined up with ZTBL in the Quaid E Azam Trophy after the camp and took 9 wickets and had no problems with his fielding."

Tanvir when contacted by PakPassion stated that he was unable to comment on his omission from the tour of New Zealand, but that he hoped that he would be selected for the six one day matches against New Zealand that follow the two test matches.

On Coaches Waqar Younis and Aaqib Javed

One thing I have learnt in my many years as a cricketer was that you never stop learning. It doesn’t matter how many years you have been playing cricket, or how old you are or how many matches you have played in, there is always room for improvement in areas such as technical issues. Once you retire from playing and become a coach or want to contribute to the game in one way or another, you require further education. You need to discuss quite a few things with different people so your thoughts are clear. However if you want to live in the past glories, you are never going to be in a position to contribute or influence anything. You can’t just live off your past experiences, you have to continue learning, you can’t just bank on reading the coaching manual, as the coaching manual isn’t always right in my opinion as it was written more than 100 years ago. Cricket is changing day by day, new innovations, new ideas, you can’t just keep on relying on the olden methods. If Waqar thinks that he can just rely on what he did as a player and without any further education that he can impart to the current side, then he’s wrong. It doesn’t work like that and it doesn’t work very often.

"Ex cricketers like Rameez Raja have ruined Pakistan cricket" : Amir Sohail

Former Pakistan Captain and Pakistan Cricket Board’s Director-Game Development Aamer Sohail’s concerns for Pakistan cricket seem to be reaching unparalleled heights. Sohail has been a vociferous critic of the current Pakistan Cricket Board regime since his resignation as the Head of the National Cricket Academy in July 2009.

However at present Sohail’s apprehension isn’t just designated for the Pakistan Cricket Board. In a candid and hard hitting interview with PakPassion.net ; Sohail presented the same aggression on a wide range of topics, that he demonstrated in 47 tests and 156 one day internationals.

On the World Cup Preparations

The confusion and uncertainty of the makeup of the 30 man preliminary squad epitomises and reflects the workings of the Pakistan Cricket Board, in that you are not sure most of the time what the planning is. Whoever comes into power in the PCB usually makes his first announcement around the winning the World Cup and how focussed they are on winning the World Cup, yet so far we haven’t even turned the first corner and we have so many problems to deal with. This is not the first time that the team will go into a World Cup with problems and concerns and an unsettled squad. In 1992 when we of course won the World Cup things were unsettled, there were players flying in and out of the squad in Australia prior to the World Cup. The same thing happened in 1999 where there were problems. Only in 1996 was it a settled side. In 2003 we weren’t sure who should be captain and then eventually the likes of Salman Butt were not selected.

I really do not know what the planning is yet once again and it seems to be a norm that there is uncertainty ahead of a major tournament like the World Cup. The PCB is of course hampered by the exclusion of certain players so until such a time as the 30 man preliminary squad is announced, it’s difficult to predict how well the team will do.

On Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik

On talent alone, both of them should be in the World Cup squad. They both have ability and bring variety to the one day team, however there are always question marks over Akmal’s wicket keeping ability. As for Malik, he can contribute a lot to the team. However there has to be clarity on whether these boys are available for selection.

On Mohsin Khan’s Options and a Lack of Strategy

If I was Mohsin Khan I would have already sat down with the Board and clarified what my options are regarding selection for the World Cup. I would have already developed a strategy for the World Cup.

On the Lack of Backup Players

It seems that Pakistan is the only major international team where if you drop a player there is a lot of hue and cry because you are not sure who is going to take his place. You don’t have the backup players and as a result that is why Pakistan will struggle in the World Cup. I guess you could say it’s too much player power.

On the Issue of Players Trying to Continue Playing in All Formats of the Game

Pakistan is the only major cricketing nation where players attempt to confine themselves to Twenty20 and one day cricket. However with other test playing nations it’s the other way around in that when the time comes and the time is right, players confine themselves to test cricket, which is the right way to go about it. When our players get older, instead of wanting to stick to test cricket which is the format they are suited to, they instead try to confine themselves to the shorter versions of the game or try to hang onto a place in all formats of the game. These senior players should be utilising their experience in test cricket, instead of trying to continue to ply their trade in twenty over and fifty over cricket.

On Mohammad Yousuf and Younus Khan

Younus has plenty to offer in one day internationals but Mohammad Yousuf should have confined himself to test match cricket. The reason why Yousuf is out of the side now is that he became too greedy and that he should be featuring in all formats of the game. If a player of Yousuf’s calibre is playing test cricket then he is earning around 350,000 rupees per match and if he’s featuring in a one day international he will earn even more than that per match.

On Part Time WicketKeepers

If a part time wicketkeeper can contribute around 70% of the wicketkeeping ability of a permanent wicketkeeper, then that is acceptable. Dravid did this for the Indian team and it helped with the combination and balance of their team. Again it comes down to the lack of planning and backups. There doesn’t seem to be a Plan B, or Plan C, if the original plan doesn’t work.

On Rameez Raja’s comments about Pakistan Domestic Cricket Having Quantity over Quality

I don’t know how Rameez Raja has the audacity to come on television and state that Pakistan cricket doesn’t have quality, but it has quantity. Ex cricketers like Rameez have ruined Pakistan cricket, because when the likes of Rameez were introducing the current format of domestic cricket, they should have thought about introducing teams like Quetta to the first class structure and why they gave Quetta first class status and why they didn’t give other more deserving regional teams first class status, if they were keen on increasing the number of first class teams. Rameez and others should think about what they have done in the past and what they have contributed, before making such statements on television.

On Selection Methods in Pakistan

The method of selection seems to be one where if you are close to the captain you will be selected, irrespective of performance. Other countries though are giving chances to up and coming players, developing their talent, testing them in international cricket, yet we seem to be relying on the same players.

How do u swing a tape ball without tempering the tape?

What do you mean? Do you want to swing a taped ball or swing a ball without tampering with the seam. Totally opposites of each other.
A taped tennis ball (one side) will give you some swing but want be the real thing.
If you can get a fairly well used leather ball (maybe around 35-40 overs) you can try. A cloudy day should do it.
A little crack or a pebble here and there on your balling surface could turn you into a Wasim Akram :-)

well you can tape only half of the tennis ball this will make the ball swing miles towards the taped side.. but if you want a full taped ball to swing there is no certain trick ... you will pretty much handle it like a hard ball and somehow shine one side and keep the other side roughed up and dirty then the ball will swing somewhat.... these are the two solutions i can think of ....

You cant swing as much in tape ball. You can try scratching off the tape from one side, but in tape ball having a slightly sideways arm is the best bet to swing
